I never realized how usefull that wheel was until mine stopped working properly...

It seems to skip a beat when i scroll down, my screen will stop moving until I have given the wheel a full turn and then it starts working again...

It's a logitech G5 and I can't seem to find any screws to undo so that I can take a look under it... it must be glued shut, what can I do to fix this problem?

The screws are hidden under the pads... First thing i would try though is spraying some compressed or canned air where the mousewheel is to remove any debris that may have coolected there.
