Fried onboard sound??

Ok, since i cant use my xfi in a certain os that i cant really speak about on this forum considering its technically "illegal",i needed to use onboard, thats where the problem starts..

When i was switching my speakers to the integrated to test it out, i thought i should hook up the front panel audio also, well, unbeknownst to me, i wasnt paying close enough attention and hooked up the audio cable for ac '97, and after i realized it(a week later while cleaning dust outta case) i unhooked it. Thing is, none of the time the sound worked, and the sound still doesnt work at all, i know it worked before because when i first got my comp i didnt put in the Xfi until later on. What i need to know, is do you think i might have killed my sound card, just to clarify, the minijacks, as the coaxial seems to work fine. In vista i tried it and same thing, doesnt recognize that i have 5.1 speakers and no sound at all:/ Did i kill it or can i fix it?

When removing the Creative card did you re-enable onboard sound? If you forgot to go into the bios setup and enable the onboard you wouldn't hear anything.

For not properly detecting or actually getting sound out of all speakers you could have a bad jack or simply need to fight to see Windows properly install the correct drivers/software sound mixer for that model board. Some boards still don't see Vista drivers even at this time if they are older models.

Yes i had the sound enabled, it was showing up in vista just fine, newest drivers off creatives site, and sound doesnt work in leo or ubuntu either. Its an evga 790i ultra, not an old board. Thats why im not sure if either i fried the sound or not by accidentally using the wrong case front audio jack connector.

For other OSs like Linux you may not find a working driver set there or have to use those found at a 3rd party site. As for connecting the audio jacks on a case you have to verify each one to make sure it's plugged in correctly at the board or card end. If you crossed wires between mic, headphone, line in or out, etc. that will stall the works right off.

Straight off, im not dumb:P I only have my 5.1 speakers hooked up, ive built enough computers to know this much. I was only asking whether or not hooking up an ac '97 connector to the motherboard connector could fry the onboard sound. And the 1/8in minijacks arent working whatsoever in any os, but coax is working. So can anyone here answer the original question, not to be mean pc eye, but i knew the things you said;)
