Fried network port?

A friend of mine recently had his broadband router destroyed by a thunderstorm, and now that they got a new router, which is exactly the same one as the previous, it doesn't recognize that the computer is hooked up to it, the same thing vice versa. It's a Zyxel Prestige 660H-61 router.

My guess is that the network port on his mobo is fried, cause that seems like the most logical explanation.

this may sound a little silly. But you can test whether the network cables is working my (and dont laugh) sticking the tip of your tongue onto the connector. Push your tongue hard so it gets into the gaps and makes contact with the metal if you get a small 3v shock then you know the cable is working and the issue is the port you're conecting it too.
