Free Os's

Most free operating systems tend to be Unix-like (Linux, BSD, etc)

Linux
Ubuntu - similar to Mac OS X
Linuxmint - a version of Ubuntu
Fedora - Redhat's community version (newest technology, but sometimes unstable)
OpenSuse - similar to MS Windows
Mandriva - similar to MS Windows
PCLinuxOS - similar to MS Windows (was originally derived from Mandriva)
Mepis - somewhat similar to MS Windows
Debian - basic (Ubuntu and Mepis are based on it)

very small Linux versions
tinycore - 10MB with GUI (microcore without GUI - 6MB)
slitaz - 30MB

BSD
PC-BSD - a BSD based OS for desktops (part of the real Mac OS X kernel is from BSD)

UNIX
OpenSolaris

Assembly Language OS - very small
Kolibri OS - fully graphical (about 4 MB I think)

Reimplementation of Windows NT
ReactOS

If you only want operating systems that have a company behind them:
Ubuntu
OpenSuse
Mandriva
Mepis
Fedora - indirectly
OpenSolaris - indirectly

i have ubuntu dual booting on my old compaq desktop, and while i cant say i use the desktop much, when i do, i really like the ubuntu. if you go for a basic linux, that is what i would use.
