Forwarding IP?

I am trying to set up a personal web page/file server on my home computer. I've tried various program but they all show my ip as either 192.168.2.3 or 127.0.0.1, and i can only access the server on my network, but i want to be able to access it on the internet. Does anyone know how i can do this?

Yes...

You need to know your public ip click this.. http://www.whatismyip.com/

Then when your outside your network, not on your router type your public ip and say port 80 like this 69.49.123.1:80 then in your router forward port 80 to your local ip of 192.168.2.3

Bascially any request for port 80 will be forwarded to that local ip...

Do you have a linksys router?

has nothing to do with it...

thanks trizoy, i'll have to wait till tomorrow to use another comp, but i forwarded port 80 to 192.168.2.3 on my router.

Yes it does. Because I know how to tell you how to forward the port in a linksys router.

I assume since your local IP addres is 192.168.2.3 then your router's address is 192.168.2.1. In your web browser type the router's IP address. It will then prompt you for a login name and password. Leave the login name blank. Provided you haven't changed it the password is admin. Choose applications and gaming. You should have a screen that looks like this:
forward.jpg

put the last part of the ip address of your server under IP address. make start and end 80, under application give it a name like web. I usually just set protocol to both and then check enable. Save your settings.
When you go to look at your web server you type your external IP address in, which is under status in your router settings.

Super your reaching there... He did not ask about how to forward a port, yet he did ask how to access a computer from outside a network..

Geoff if you want me to try to see if it connects send me a pm.. ill let you know if it works.. Or you can give someone a link over aim.. If you have friends online right now.

im heading off to school in a min, so i wont be able to see your response till later, but i'll give it to you so you can test it out.

I have a Belkin router.

And i thought that i would probably have more luck if i connected directly to the modem, so i set up port forwarding in my modem for port 80 on ip 192.168.0.65.

Yet without knowing how to forward a port to his server he will never be able to access from external (unless you set up vpn). It does look lilke geoff has setup the forwarding already.
Also if your trying to access a web server through a browser then you dont need to add the :80 to the end of the address, post 80 will be used by default for http traffic
Geoff look into something like www.dyndns.org to ensure you can still access your web server if the ip ady changes while you are out.

Geoff are you sure you enabled the port forwarding correctly, and to external addresses and do you have a firewall setup on the machine, if so you will need to open up port 80

My ip adress never changes, i believe its a static ip.
And yes, i already got port 80 forwarded on my modem. Im trying now to access it from school.

EDIT: I tried it and it works!! thanks trizoy and others for your help :D

it may not change very often, if your ip provider has only a small pool of free address then its possible you keep picking up the same one. But unless you pay for static ip specifically then its unlikely that the have :)
Either way dyndns will give you a nicer url, rather than a ip addy to remember.

well, seeing that i've had the same ip since we got our dsl (this past february), it always been the same. And in the instructions on setting up the modem, it tells us to select static ip, and type in a certain address (which im not going to post here) :)
