formatting sd card

i have a card reader. can i format from explorer? Or do i have to use the camera. its a cannon S3IS. I have 1 and 2 gig cards. Also is a fat32 if i can?

If you format in computer might not work right with your camera(if thats what you plan on using it with), but yes you can format with your computer.

Ok, thanks. i have some utilities on disc. im thinking i have some freeware that might work. i will post if it works.

I would format in your camera if you are using it for the camera. And canmera companies suggest to format your memory card at least once a year.

One thing though. i do not have the power supply. can i use the batteries and how long does it take?

you can format the card with your computeer but its best to format it through the digicam so it can put the folders it needs back onto the card.
No it doesn't take long, i can format my 30Gb HDD on my video-cam and it only take a few seconds so a 1 or 2Gb SD shouldn't take anymore than 30 seconds.
