Foamy thing that goes over mic???

I'm just wondering if there is a purpose to this foamy thing(don't know how else to discribe it:( ) that covers the microphone of the headset?

dont know for sure, but i think it is supposed to cancel out some of the background noise. seems logical?
 
If you talk to close to the mic, your breath makes a loud crackly/static sound. This distorts your vioce. The foamy material stops the wind/breath from hitting the mic, but the sound still gets there.
 
I've seen that it also partly muffles sound so it might not be as clear sound as possible but definitely beats breathing on the mic.
 
Yeah, it's a wind guard or whatever you want to call it. Either for out doors use or as others said, to keep you from blowing too hard in it. It also can help keep spit off of the mic ;)
 
I think it was in china a team doing research on dolphins used condoms to cover the mic and protect it, the only problem was finding the condoms.

Random deviation there... :D
