Flatbed scanner recomendations

Im looking at getting a nice flat bed scanner to go through all of my parents old film and archive them. I am currently looking at the HP G4050 scanner (online about $150) but it seems to have received a mixed bag of reviews. Also many customers mentioned problems with Vista, but they were dated early july, so HP may have updated those problems since then.

Any thoughts on this one or can recommend a good flat bed scanner in the $200 price range? It has to be able to scan photos in addition to film and work with Vista. Thanks!

I like Epson scanners. I have been using a Epson 1660 for the last 3 years or so and it works great. It does negatives and 35mm slides. Also if you put more than one picture on the flatbed it will scan them at the same time, but they will be seperate pictures when it finishes.

Not sure if it works with Vista, but the Epson line of scanners are first rate.

I used to have a HP flatbed scanner that I bought back in the late 90's. It was only a 600dpi scanner and was a scsi model. I paid $500 for it at the time and it was HUGE! It took up more space than my monitor and printer together.

Funny you mention Epson, I found the Epson Perfection V500 Photo for about $200 after a $50 rebate at staples and it has received some really fantastic reviews. They say the negative scanner on it is top of the line and it can do almost any size negatives including some of the older sizes which my parents have a lot of.

Like I said, Epson makes some great scanners. Mine does great scans of negatives and 35mm slides. I usually scan them at 600dpi then remove any dust and such with photoshop.

Awesome! Im pretty excited to do this for the fam. She has probably close to a thousand pictures and negatives. Can the epson scan multiple pictures at once and split them into separate files?

I think I have landed on going with the Epson v500 photo scanner. Does anyone else have any advice or comments on this model or on Epsons products? The HP G4050 had lots of reviews but it seemed to be only mediocre by most peoples watches. With the Epson, the consensus is 10 to 1 positive reviews almost everywhere I have looked.

For photos, I believe that Epson is the best for printing, scanning, everything. Although for the printing part, Canon is sure giving them a run for their money...

I have my Epson V500 photo on hold for me at Staples for pickup on Wednesday! Its $249.99 list with $50 Easy Rebate/ $20 coupon (off $100 purchase) plus two gift cards ($30+$35) means Im gonna get it for around $120! Nice!

Thanks again for everyones inputs. The reviews for this model have been stellar so Im excited to get it up and running!
