So here I am again so soon. Had to rant again! ha ha
I fixed my fathers computer the other day, and don't ask me the specs, I can't remember other than a three year old Dell workhorse, with XP-SP2 and less than a GB of RAM. Says it all doesn't it.
He isnt too comp literate. I noticed that it was taking him MINUTES to boot-up, log on and then do anything. I got to asking him stuff like, "do you know what Disk Defragmenter is?". The reply I got was great, just a "What?"
I took all day (yeah it took me all day to deal with this thing) to clean it up. Deleting all the normal stuff, killing the usual thousand programs off the start up list. Removing things he didn't know he even had. Running Defrag (three years without a defrag! WOW that thing was RED!), chkdsk, memory checks, disk cleanup, anti virus scans, updating drivers and software (like java and windows and etc).
By the time I finished it could start up and log on in seconds.
I have met a woman in IHOP once that told me she had hundreds of viruses found every time she scaned her computer with Norton Anti-Virus (gag). So I asked her what she normally did online. Nothing too terrible, then her 17 year old daughter walked up to the table an sat down with her mother. It was then that I knew why they were having so much trouble. I pointed to her kid and asked how she got music...
I got the answer "Limewire, its sooo cool cause its all free!) So I told the mother that if she cared about her computer, take it to somewhere to get cleaned-up. Then I told her that if the wants music, they should go pay for it somewhere legit like your supposed to. And not DL it all on Limewire (extra hard GAG!).
It astonishes me what people do with computers and never expect repercussions. At least there will always be the need for the repairman.
