First Post...Don't Kill

I guess I would start by saying, I'm pretty naive when it comes to understanding hardware and the stuff that makes it tick. I can use the hell out of all MS Office software and anything Adobe, but put a piece of hardware in front of me and I'm lost. I just recently bought a new sound card. An audiophile 2496 for my computer. The default sound card in the computer was a Realtek 97. Nice little card, but not for what I want. I own a home studio and am interested in recording audio without delays, pops, and dropouts. Realtek can't support this need, but I heard the 2496 can and is one of the best. After praying and praying, I finally figured out how to open up the computer, found out where the card went, and plug it in tightly. The system recoginzed a new device. I installed the driver and it says its working properly. Problem is, unless I keep the realtek card on, I can't hear any sounds. I even disabled it, and enabled the new card, but no sound. What am I doing wrong? What did I just get myself into? Am I ever going to be able to record the way I want to? Help. I searched the net for an answer and it brought me here...

fred.

start > settings > control panel > sounds and audio devices. once there, click audio, and make sure the top drop down box is on your good soundcard, and not realtek.

I did that, but it still plays from the REALTEK. When I make sure that everything is indicated as the Delta...it plays, but no sound. :(

Ya, if you want to do that you have to go into your system BIOS (usually by pressing f1 or f2 on startup) and then looking around for something that says "onboard audio", make sure it is turned off, but that is only if the other sound card is onboard.

Thanks for all the help. I think I could figure out how to shut off the realteck using the bios method, however, the new sound card is a plug. I've plugged it into a PCI Slot. Does that make it onboard? Forgive me, I just don't know...I just don't know.

the realtek will be onboard, that means its intergrated to the motherboard. go into bios and disable it, this should solve your problems

Not quite sure what I did, but didn't go through the BIOS. However, I have sound now coming out of my new sound card. I tried recording audio and it worked like a charm. Now I just have one problem. I have an audiophile card with the red/white jacks plugged in and connected to the subwoofer with the new card playback. It works great. The green slot for the onboard speaker wire now becomes unecessary. Where do I plug in the headphones to hear audio now so It doesn't leak as I am recording audio? I am using a Tascan U122 to plug in the mic to and use as a recording interface, but when I plug in the headphones on that jack...no sound. Guys, I'm sorry for this nonsense. I just need direction. I am much better at making music than computers. Let me get this going, put out my CD and let the credits to this forum roll... i mean it.

If you didn't diable the realteK then it's still advisable that you do it, and as everyone has pointed out that's done in your bios.

Don't worry about it Fred, its alright that you don't know computers, we do so we are here to help!! : )

Like Sophocles said, you should still disable the realtek in the BIOS to make your new card the only one that sound will go out of.

Are you really gonna put this forum in the credits?? Cool..... ; )

You guys have been great. Just a few quirks here and there and I'm ready to go. Oh and I'm not sure what the rule is for posting sites, but here goes... for those interested, find me at www.vithereturn.com

You can hear some of my music and see what I'm trying to do with my computer.

so did you figure out how to get the sound working? I didnt disable my onboard sound, i wanted to make sure that you had the speakers plugged into the sound card, not theonboard card.

I did plug the speakers to the sound card, made sure that the audio would play from that source making the onboard unnecessary. My earlier question to anyone willing to help, is...I don't have a head phone jack to listen to music on the new soundcard or the speakers. is there an adapter I need, is there something I'm missing?

Upon further review, my audio cables are hooked up to the midi jacks and are playing the music. When I switched them into the audio jacks...it didn't work. What gives?
