Fire transfer from PC to Laptop using Ethernet/Firewire cable ???

I've connected my Laptop with my PC, using BOTH the Ethernet cable (from my laptop to the back of the Ethernet card inside my PC) & ALSO using the Firewire cable.

In layman's term, can anyone help me as once doing so, what exactly needs doing, in order to drag & drop files from my PC to the laptop or vice versa ???
 
I believe you will have to set one machine's IP address as static 192.168.1.1 and set the other one's IP to static 192.168.1.10 and run the network setup wizard on both machines....it's been a while since I've done that, but it was something along those lines....pretty simple once you figure it out
 
make sure you have a crossover cable for the ethernet, straight through (the kind for pc to router/switch) won't work
 
you've had a straight-through cable work directly from one pc to another without a hub or switch or router in between?
