Finding a Router, How Do I wire it up?

I need a router, I like this Netgear, what do you guys think? Is there a way I can disable the firewall on it? It will be wired to 3 PC's, 2 on Win98 and one on XP. Yeah, it's not my biz office. Will this be compatible with those OS's? I don't care for Linksys(Cisco) stuff, they always seem to have a screwy driver or some hardware issues:rolleyes:.

Thanks a bunch

i got it for u. to take off the firewall read this !!

Netgear® RP614 Cable/DSL Web Safe Router Gateway:

1. Open a browser window and type 192.168.0.1 in the address field (or if you've changed the default IP of your router, type that IP into the window)
2. Type admin as the user name and password as the password (unless you've specified a different username and/or password, which you would then type that in) username and password should be admin - admin
3. Click on the Settings Backup link located below the Maintenance heading on the left hand side of your browser window)
4. Under "Revert to factory default settings", click the Erase button. This will reset your router to it's 'out of the box' configuration
5. If you have set the router to a static IP, then you would redo those settings at this point, or if your ISP requires a login, or you are using PPPoE**, then this is also the time to input those details.
6. If you have forgotten the user name and/or password that you changed to, then you can press the reset button on the back of the router for 10 seconds, and then let it reboot itself. It should be back to the default configuration at this point.

there sould be a tab called firewall if not look around for it . it should have it in there. if not idk then i tryed :)

Why would you want to disable the firewall?

Firewalls on routers are usually much better than software firewalls.

Routers are OS independent, so you can connect any machine with any OS, it won't make a difference. There are no drivers to install.

As for connecting it up... make sure you have enough ports, if you have 3 machines you need at least a 4 port router. All you do is plug an ethernet cable from each pc (assuming you have ethernet cards or built in ports) to the router. If the router has built in ADSL/Cable modem then you can also have internet access. Otherwise you could add a modem with ethernet connection and connect your router that way.

I sent a friend to pick it up and it wasn't in stock(CRAP!!), I wanted the one with wireless capability that was based on this one(WGR614). After this, the "pecker-head" salesperson(Office Depot) persuaded my friend a Linksys WRT54G. Is this Linksys any good? I've heard they are difficult because of Cisco based junk. Why don't they just let me get what I came to get? I have more experience in tech. advisory than an Office Depot salesperson does, they must think that walking through the computer aisle at Office Depot qualifies them to lecture me on what type of router to buy.

Thanks guys

I have the WRT54G and its a great router, has lots of features such as port prioritization, and lets you assign computers and devices that get highest priority.

thats cool, shame neither of my routers do that, i have been looking for somethign like that for a while.

It is pretty cool. It's not a miracle worker, but it does help keep my ping fairly low when my mom or sister is uploading/downloading music and photos. In the past my ping used to jump up to 300-400, causing me to get kicked on most servers, but now it usually jumps up to 100-150.
