hey guys i'm trying to share files between my desktop and laptop...can anyone give me a detailed step description of how to set up a network? for both, i'm using wirless internet connection which connects to my dlink router...thanx
I'm not sure where abouts you are in the setting up of your network, so i'll try and run through the whole thing . You said you have a wireless router; does your laptop and desktop have the hardware to pick up the signal? Most modern laptops seem to have the whole wireless enabled thing, but if not, you need a wireless card. Same for your desktop, wireless PCI card or USB key.
Once you got that sorted, you just go to your control panel and use the wireless network setup wizard to get it going (this is if you have XP, other OS i don't know). Make sure both Laptop and Desktop have the same WorkGroup name (that's covered in the wireless setup wizard). And that should be it. You can then access files on both systems by going to "view workgroup computers". If you have any antivirus programs, you'll need to sort that out or if you want to setup Wireless security have a look at http://www.computerforum.com/56611-wireless-security.html
hey...thanx for taking ur time and answering my questions...i have followed ur directions...i've gotten the workgroup...and when i go to my network places...i can see the computer..but when i click on it...it says...unable to connect to the computer. network resources unavailable. you might not have permission from administrator. Network path not found. i have also allowed the ip adress on the firewall...so wats wrong?
This may sound stupid but i know loads of people who type in their external ip instead of each individual computer's ip (to get the individual ip of each machine type cmd into run, then ipconfig) . Also, make sure you've sorted out the firewalls on both your desktop and laptop.
I prefer wired networks so i'm not sure what else it could be. All i know is that it sounds like a classic firewall block. If your laptop can connect to the internet but not to your PC files, then it's your firewall (that of course being if your laptop and PC are picking up the wireless signal in the first place). If you can't sort it, then what antivirus program you got?
i did type in the computer's individual id...and i have disabled all my firewalls..i use AVG as my antivirus program...and i can't figure out why its not connecting
