Extension?

Hi, I was looking for a way to extend the wire for my webcam about 100feet, maybe less maybe more. So far I tried to just use ethernet cable, and wiring the camera wires into the ethernet cable, but that was not very successful. I'm using the webcam on an remote controlled diving apparatus/ROV type device, and I didn't want to go and buy a wireless webcam. Any ideas how to extend the USB cord? I already programmed the servos to work on a PS2-like controller which I wired into a USB device, but the camera is being a real meanie, for a lack of better words. Any ideas?

Get a lot or USB extension cables, make sure they are the shielded kind, tape them together with electrical tape, and you are made!

Yep, that really is your only choice. You can't really find USB cables over 20ft. Why do you need your webcam 100ft from your comp?

The only problem with extending a USB cable that far is that the signal strength isn't very good beyond 20ft or so... Wireless would be the best way to go, but there are other converters that would be able to extend that distance a little better. But then, it might be just as cheap to go wireless in the end... :)

Ya they have converters that will turn it into a ethernet cable and then back to usb, but they are a minimum of $50 plus 100 cat 5 cable, you can get them for like $20. Thats still at least $70 though.

And for a little bit more than that, you can get a nice wireless one that should work a whole heck of a lot better too...
