I recently had this problem, when the DVD-drive icon disappeared, then I managed to bring it back using WinXP manager but the sound disappeared after two days only. In Device Manager everything is fine, no exclamation marks or so. When I play sound, it appears in Winamp but no sound on the speakers (which still work (buzz) by the way). I tried plugging in the cable into different holes but remains the same.
When in safe mode, it shows that I have no audio hardware and some directsound driver is damaged. i downloaded drivers for the soundcard (REALTEK AC97) and installed them for like a 100 times but it still the same. I don't know whether is a hardware or software problem.
