Ethernet cable durability???

Does anyone know if it would be ok to have ethernet cable run outside, it most likely can be protected by house siding, but mainly I'm concerned with cold weather and those types of things, does anyone know if it will cause any problems, I'll be going either 3 floors down then like 8 ft across or 4 floors down then up from the basement to the router which either way the longest portion is just dropping the line to the 1st floor/basement. Sorry for the confusing explanation thx for any replies.

you dont want wireless? u can get cat6e cables less interference and since you say they're protected so cat5e are good too.

there are two types of cat5 cables, Riser and Plenum. one of them is rated for outdoor use, just cant remember which :(

you need to make sure that you look specifically for cable that has been rated for outdoor use because normal cat5 cables aren't waterproof and you'll lose your connection in next to no time.

if you cant find any cable rated for outdoor use you should consider putting it into a length of conduit to protect it agains the elements.

PVC conduit is suitable for this and quite easy to work with.
