Education in the IT field.

So i'm currently pursuing an Associates in the Computer Information Systems/Information Technology field. (Focus in Networking.) I've had numerous suggestions on my education.

Some say: "Screw education! Certifications are the only thing that matter. Get your cert's and you'll have a great job."

Others say: "Finish your Associates, get your certifications. Pursuing a bachelors is pointless in the IT field. Experience is what matters."

Others say: "The higher, the education- the better. Forget what the others say"

So i'm asking the CF world. Your thoughts on education in the IT field?

I've worked in the software business for 25 years and in my experience those without degrees are the first to get laid off and the last to get rehired.

Thanks for responding. Thats what I've always thought. If you've got a Resume from a employee who's had two years experience and an associates; and you have a Resume from a employee who's had two years experience and a bachelors, you're obvious choice will be the employee with a bachelors. So technically, with a bachelors i'll have a leg up. *Hopefully*

But would you say that Certifications > Education? Or Education > Certifications?

Well, I can't say much for certifications since I don't have any. I'm employed as a Sr Software Engineer for a large software company. I have an AA in Electronics and a BS in Management.

I've always advised my 4 adult kids that education is the way to go. Must be why all 4 are in college right now.

Thanks for the response. I'm kind of set on Certifications being a necessity seeing as how I'm studying Networking. I think I'd at least need Network + , and MCITP.
