easy questions about optical and other inputs

well i have the soundblaster x-fi 24 bit sound card on my pc and I just purchased the Logitech z-5500s

they 'control pod' is attached via a 6-channel direct front(green) rear(black) center&sub (orange)

is this the best way to connect? there is also a place to attach a coaxial and optical cord....the back of the sound card has a place for optical in and out...but i dont recall getting an optical cord from Logitech?

it sounds great for games and music is good...although it seems like it could be better

6Ch Direct is the only way for surround sound in games and etc with the xfi, and the xfi does not come with an optical out cord.

well my sb xfi card comes with an optical in/out on it right next to the direct

my question is would using an optical cord from the z-5500 to the sound card produce a better sound since it is digital, or would the 6 channel direct be the better way?

If it came with an optical out then you should use optical out. Optical out is digital and should sound better. However, do make sure that your soundblaster card supports 5.1 optical out, instead of just stereo.

well i took an optical cord from my TV and used it from the z-5500 speaker system and plugged it into the soundcard of my PC but the speaker system did not recognize anything. I don't know if I have to initialize digital mode or not, but the connection ports are there!

I am confused...

There might be some sort of settings you have to change. Look around, I can't really help you here because I have an x-fi that doesn't have any sort of optical out.
