DX10 Support

I know that my x1950 XTX will not support DirectX 10. Out of curiosity I was wondering if there would be some type of update or hack that would make that possible when Vista is on the market? Like, has it been done with previous card models and DX versions?

What do you mean? Basically any version of DirectX will work with basically any card. The only problem is you might not have all the features.

New versions of directX work on old video cards it's just the features aren't hardware accelerated.

Not likely. I haven't really read up on it but I doubt they touched the older functions. And for any DX10 features that are driver enabled, they will defiently be slower.

So it's better for people with the older cards to stick with 9.0c instead of getting 10, as it'll just make it worse?

Well, a DX9 game wont use any of those software enabled features ;)

Also after checking on it, it looks like DX10 doesn't support any old funtions, as they will be provided in a seperate API.

Why would they bring out a new Direct X that didnt work on basically all graphics cards.

Because if they do that, they cant take DX10 and DX10 cards to their full potential, which is why Microsoft decided to make DX10 not backwards compatible.

And to the original question, you can install DX10 but you wont have the hardware features such as SM4, Geometry shaders, etc. You cant "hack" that either, because those features arent built into the card.

just a question.. whats the etc? iirc SM4 and geometry shaders is all thats new in dx10, no? ofc i could be wrong.

yea.. but thats basicly the grafic's card doing a task more, wich the CPU would normally do. doesnt really add much tbh :o

Thats all I could remember when I made that post, but I put the "etc" there so I cant get quoted by someone saying "theres more then just that!" :P

wow, i didnt expect so many responses. I did think the DX10 would work with old graphic cards, I was just wondering about, that someone did answer, the new features that DX10 would probably have that wouldnt work with DX9 cards. So thanks

DX10 cards are out, but DX10 games arent out yet.

As others have said, and as you probably know, you can install DX10 but you cant take advantage of DX10's new hardware-related features.
