DVD's Stored Digitally?

Hi all,

For a while now I've been backing up most of my DVD's digitally on my computer in an .iso format (a coulple with actual DVD files). But I just barely started using windows media center because I got a remote. Now, I was wondering a way I can convert my DVD's into a file type that WMC can read, without destroying the menu system and such. I would not like to get a third party add-on, but rather put all my media in one folder so I can have it in the video section of WMC. I hope I explained that well enough, any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

I have not done such before. If this is legal go to the file of the movie say MallCop.iso and right click and change properties and choose it to open with say WMC and if legal and wanted change the name MallCop.iso to MallCop.wmv or whatever desired.

MallCop is just an example

Here is about Mall Cop btw:

use MagicDisk (MagicISO) to mount your dvd on a "virtual drive" then play the content from there.

Alternatively you can use DVDShrink to convert the dvd from the "iso" (after mounting virtually) to a dvd fileset (stores all the info on your hd with full menu and options)

Best piece of advice ever, or best piece of advice ever?

 ummm. No....

.iso and .wmv are to completely different file types, you can't just rename the file and hope it works.

EDIT: A virtual drive is what you want. You can use such a program to mount the image file (.iso) and play it like a normal DVD (these programs will create a drive in "My Computer")

In addition to what Cravin said, there's also Deamon Tools and PowerISO you can try.

EDIT2: Also, this is all legal as long as you own the original DVD copy.

Of course I'm not doing anything illegal here. And it's a little funny, Mall Cop is one of the movies I'm playing around with.

As for a virtual drive, the reason I didn't want to do that, is I want to have a computer dedicated to storing and playing videos, that way I can use the remote to browse, select, and play a movie.

There's no way to convert this to a file type natively read by windows?

Not without loosing the menu and maybe some extra features. However, you may be able to find a file type that supports menus, but I doubt wmp can play it even if you find the right codecs.

I think mpeg will do since that's what dvds are anyway. There's tons of dvd ripping programs out there, but I'm not that familiar with this stuff. We should wait for another reply, or you could do a search on the net.

If DVD's are in MPEG, does that imply MPEG maintains the menu system?

(I'll google in the meantime, see what I can learn)

I don't think so, it just means that's the video compression technique used in DVDs. The menu is other code standardized for dvd players.

I do believe that some mkv files can have menus. But I don't think wmp can play them...

Tsk Tsk Tsk, you guys realize breaking DVD encryption(eg- ripping dvd's to computer) is against copyright laws and therefore illegal, right?

http://www.computerforum.com/52038-forum-rules.html
1. Posting/discussion about software cracks, serial no's, and illegal downloading and duplication of software is prohibited.
2. Discussions which actively encourage illegal activities including but not limited to hacking/malicious harm to computers/networks/breaking terms of service is prohibited.

You have to break encryption in order to get it digitally?

EDIT: From what I've read thus far, it's part of the "Fair Use Policy", but has never been tested in US courts. I guess it's kind of a gray area. So, AFAIK, ripping a DVD for my own personal use is legal. This is from 20 minutes of research, though.

The DMCA explicitly states the breaking of the encryption is illegal, and therefore most of the threads created relating to this subject have been locked previously.

wait, wait, wait... So its illegal to have an HTPC with my dvd collection on it? Even though I have all the original dvds?
