Dust

I recently cleaned my computer after it was getting extremely hot, and the temperature changed drastically.
And I was wondering how many times a year should I clean my computer?
And does anyone have tips on how to the fans?

Depends on the area where you live. If it gets a lot of dust then I would do it at least once a month. To blow out the fans use a can of compressed air. Technically you should hold the fan while spraying so it don't spin past its recommended speed.

I always live on the risky side and use a vacuum cleaner on my fans :P I love the noise they make when they go really fast.

Everything else done by hand though, gets better and cleaner ;)

Just to add, not just depending on your area, but also on where the system is. If it is on a work surface off the floor not too often. If it is on the floor, especially on carpet, you will need to do it more often bceause there is more dust there

You know you can totally ruin the bearings of a fan by overspinning them right?

How do you get the clumps of dust out of the fans properly?
Unscrew them, dampen a few Q-tips, wipe the blades down with them. If you put some furniture polish onto a qtip(the spray kind, brand name slipping my mind atm) and wipe that onto the rear of the fanblades it helps prevent dust buildup ~somewhat.

Edit: pledge! thats the brand of the dusting spray, i personally use stuff called lemonsheen, its industrial grade stuff though(get it for free).

How do you guys get the dust out of the CPU heatsink that's right behind the fan? Compressed air can't get rid of all of it, and a cotton swab can't reach.

WD-40 should keep the dust off also
Actually wd40 stays put there, and actually attracts dust from what ive found when using it to lubricate things in dusty environments, it gets thick and goopy. It might work, but it seems like it would just cause more buildup from previous esperiences.

i only use compressed air for in case cleaning, when i do my per 6 months thorough cleaning (take everything outside case) i run the heatsink under the nozzle on the hose outside, makes the fins like new. then i let it dry before i put it in of course. Use compressed air for gpu heatsinks though.....
