Downloading probs

Hi,:)

I've just registered and am hoping that someone will be able to help me with my problem.

I am using a new laptop (since Jan this year), with OS Windows 7.

However, when trying to download programmes, eg occasionally music, or any other type of programme, it sometimes (not every time), pops up a rectangular box, displaying the following message:-

c:\Users\"my name"~1\App Data\local temp
could not be saved because you cannot change the contents of that folder.
Change folder properties and try again.

It doesn't allow me to click on anything else other than a "X" in the top right corner of the box.

I had problems trying to locate this folder and although I have a little knowledge with computers, I am guessing that it maybe "hidden"?

Depending on what I am downloading, (which isn't very often), this folder always pops up and I don't know how to change it in order to download to another folder, as each time I click the "X" in the message box, I am back to square one.

Hope I've provided enough info, in order for someone to help.

I do appreciate any help at all and thanks in advance.

Any questions, just fire away, but be patient if I don't appear quite computer savvy, LOL!! :P

You are downloading to that folder and can't. When you download something you get a download box that comes up for you to save the file, all you need to do is change where it saved in the top box I believe for windows 7.

Create a directory somewhere. I have a d:\drive also.
Also have a directory called download. don't get know easier.

Create directory:
Goto at the top:
Tools:
Options: Click radio button : save file to.
Locate directory (download) for example.
You always know where its at.

Okay, will try that when I'm home. :)

Never created a directory before and didn't know it was possible.

The box that pops up doesn't give me an option to save elsewhere, it just states what I've mentioned already.

However, I came across something which I decided I'd like to download last night and I had the normal message box pop up, giving me the option of where to save it to, so that was done and dusted, no probs.

Just not sure why this particular one pops up.........there must be a reason why....................and why can't I see what's in the folder??

I will try to create a directory, just unsure and don't want to cause probs due to my lack of knowledge.

Please could someone give clear instructions on how to create a different directory? I have a folder called "downloads", but I still won't be able to change the path to be saved to when downloading, if I still keep getting the above message on different occasions!! Why was I able to download something yesterday.......? That all went through as normal, but other times, this previously mentioned message pops up??

Any help to clarify would be brill.

Thanks. :)

So are you saying that you aren't trying to save downloads to that folder? I would suggest downloading and running Malwarebytes and Ccleaner. You may be infected or have a temp file issue.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Download and run Ccleaner.

http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/

Install the program and then set the options that checked in the attaced image then click on run cleaner.

So are you saying that you aren't trying to save downloads to that folder?

Hi John, what I am trying to say is that whenever I wish to download, this particular box pops up, not like the usual box that should, allowing the option to save to another folder.

Sometimes this box appears and on other occasions, the normal box pops!!

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log.

Do you mean 'post' it here? (Sorry to appear irgnorant). Will that be as simple as doing a print screen and posting into message as normal?

Will give this a go John and let you know. Thanks for your time in providing all this info.

Beth.

No, you don't do a print screen, you just copy and paste the log back here in a reply that malwarebytes and hijackthis produces.
