Downloaded Files

I found that this computer has a place it stores all downloaded files and it's getting bigger every day my son uses it to download stuff from his schools site.

If I delete them, will it delete off the computer?

And should I save some of them?

Some of the downloads are programs I'v downloaded myself, like antivirus, malwarebytes and stuff.I don't think it would delete those off the computer unless I go to uninstall.

Some of the stuff I would like to save for a later date if he needs needs for some reason.

I guess I could copy and paste them to another folder.

Thanks,

Well, you should really organize your stuff, makes cleaning stuff out a lot easier ;) So, save your son's stuff to another folder, it would make sense to put it in another directory. You can then just delete all the "setups/installs" you downloaded, in the "Downloads" folder, usually found in "My Documents".

It in a folder called downloaded file located in "My Documents" under computers name.

I thought CCleaner was suppose to clean all the up?

So I could just make a new folder in "My Documents" and direct the downloads to it?
Haven't tried it,but can I copy and paste them to a different folder?

Yes, but what's the difference which folder the files are in? They'll take up the same amount of space on the hard drive.

I guess I was just thinking of naming the folder by his name so it would be easier for him to find.He just started using computers this year at school, and I don't know that much about them either.

Thanks,

Hi stewartlittle,

The Downloads folder is a common place for your web browsers to download files to. This is the default location. You can change this in the Internet Options control panel if you really want. I recommend leaving it set the way it is and moving the files that you want to keep out of it and into another directory. Just delete the ones you do not want to keep. After all, you can usually just download them again if needed.

Since your son just started using computers at school, you may want to consider setting him up with his own user account. This way, you can manage what programs and files he has access to as well as control how much disk space he can use. He would also have his own documents and download folder then. It may also help him acclimate to modern computer use faster. How old is your son, if I may ask?

Also, CCleaner does not clean out the Downloads folder.

He turned 12 today, and my wife just called me saying he's sick at school. What a way to celebrate your B-day.

I don't know how to set it up like that, but I'm sure I can find some one that does so they can show me,maybe.
This one lady I know has got her daughter set up like that on her laptop,I'll ask her next time she's over.

I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully he will get better soon.

As far as multiple users go, we could walk you through that here if you want. Just let us know.
