These are rules of thumbs to be followed with no exceptions.
One do is to defrag the HDD. How often seems to vary depending on who you ask.
Now here are two don'ts:
1) Never defrag your SSD as that can severely impact your writes.
2) When I was waiting for the power to be restored (due to being knocked out from Hurricane Sandy), I took my smartphone down to the car to charge it up. Nothing wrong with that except I didn't have my engine running so I lost power to my car's battery. Run your engine when charging up your phone (do the same when you play your radio or have your lights on).
