don't copy DVDs?

I bought a DVD movie and tried to make a backup as I have done many times before, it froze my DVD burner, rendered it completely useless. I then took the DVD movie to another computer and again tried to make a backup but the same thing happened, my DVD burner froze up completely useless. I had heard it was legal to make a backup copy but I guess those days are over. After trying everything to fix my DVD burner I was finally able to restore it by loading Linux, it's free, evidently this erases or overwrites whatever damage the malware does to disable the burner hardware. Anyone having the same problem, download Linux Ubuntu and load it. You can then delete it and load windows and the DVD burner will be in good working order again.

Those days aren't over. It's perfectly legal to make a copy of a DVD for home use.

...as long as you don't circumvent the copy protection on a commercial disc, that is. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act forbids the use of software tools to bypass copy protection.

"The moment you crack DRM (Digital Rights Managemnt) to rip the DVD, you've violated Title I of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. 17 U.S.C. 1201 prohibits circumvention of DRM"
