Does anyone have any idea how to get my sound to work?

I have been experiencing problems with the sound on my computer for over a week now, can't seem to figure it out. At first I just thought my speakers went bad so I went out and bought new speakers and found out that they don’t work either. So I tried plugging the new speakers into my iPod and learned that it was actually my computer and not the speakers. I am positive that I hooked it up right and I am positive that the speakers are on and the volume is raised. (These speakers didn’t come with a disc or anything so I know I didn’t have to install something special) I tried various things such as updating drivers, hooking them up in different places, ensuring that the device usage is enabled, and what not.

At one point when I was updating the device Creative SB Live! Value (WDM) it asked me to locate devldr32.exe and so I did but I’m not sure if it worked even though it’s listed in the Driver File Details and maybe if it didn’t work that could be the problem?

I am not exactly computer savvy but I am most appreciative with whatever help I can get. :o Thanks.

EDIT:
I am using a Gateway
Windows XP
(Not sure if that helps, hehe)

Speakers won't need drivers. Go to device manager. Is there an exclamation by the sound card or anything? And assuming you have onboard, have you disabled it in the bios? This is not required, but sometimes the onboard can remain as your primary.

it sounds like a bad sound card/sound port. did you use the same jack connector (green cable) with the new speakers as the old ones? it could be a cable problem or a sound problem
