i have a problem. I don´t play computer games very often but i do from time to time. And in the years i feel that i´m not so smart any more that i used to be. I can´t get through the games by myself.
I have had this problem all the time lately and now I started to play Chrono trigger for old times sake and i get stuck all the time - its so difficult. At first i was sure i can do it myself but i got so annoyed at last so i started to use a walktrhough. i do think i have become stupider in times, ´cause i don´t recall that i was so much stuck when i fist played it. Do you sometimes have same kind of problems?
Tell me please that i´m not the only here....
Or is it really that alcohol is killing my braincells already..?

I have become smarter with my decision making as I have aged.
I have become more wise with the passing of time and gaming has nothing to do with it.

I think there's a bit of a different dynamic, which may or may not depend on the genre of game. IE, I'm much less concerned about dying and am more willing to attempt riskier strategies than from being in a younger mindset and not analyzing so much of the opponent or other variables.

A large chunk of it is that there isn't as much free time to sink into something like playing CS all day every day, so in comparison I feel more feeble/etc.

Lol, I'm 12 and I am spending tons of money on a high end CPU and Mobo (in Romania they're about 20% more expensive) just to play Battlefield 4.

Got me beat, I built my first system when I was 14. Athlon 64, 1GB RAM, 320GB HD, and ATI 9600XT :P

I built my first when I was 32, using an 8088 cpu. That was in 1986. Back then there were no books or the internet to read about how to do it so figured it out on my own.

I didn't answer the poll but I do think I'm not as smart as I used to be. I may be wiser but I know my memory is not what it used to be. For instance, I used to be able to remember the whole plot of movies I had seen complete with dialog. Now I'm lucky if I can remember whether I ever saw a particular movie, let alone what it was about.

Really, info then was just from a few friends that fooled with computers, other then that you were just on your own figuring it out. Thinking back on it now, it was fun and really the best way to learn. Most back then knew nothing about computers, some were not even sure what you did with them.

Now if you have a quirk with a computer you can do a quick search and find 222,749 different reasons why its happening

I finished a few Tomb Raiders I couldn't when they came out... So I feel smarter? lol that's a weird question!

Alcohol plays a big role in this.
Same applies to smoking, drugs and all other crap that people take today...
So stop drinking.
But you are not gonna listen to me anyway so...

I had a patient who had a total liver failure because of alcohol and he died after few days...
And before that he was drunk for years...
And THAT my dear friend is a crappy life.

So...STOP drinking!

God...

I saw people who smoke weed, drink alcohol and what not...and I have to tell you...the way they talk and act is different...in the worse way of course. You can clearly see that their brain does not work properly.
And when I would start to explain them WHY all that crap they take is bad, they would just laugh and tell me I am stupid.
Sure!
Ok!
But if I am stupid then how do I earn so much money with programming while they can barely get the money for a new bottle of alcohol?

So...stop drinking and all other bad things you are currently doing (if any),eat HEALTHY FOOD ONLY and study more.Don't play computer games all the time.Computer games are not a showing factor of how SMART you are...

Hell I remember when I played Resident Evil 1...there was a part when I was supposed to find a key to a room and I for the life of me I couldn't find it.
Am I stupid because of THAT?
Of course not.I went to take a look at the walkthrough and problem solved.
It't just a freaking GAME...Jesus...

God I really hate when people are complaining of how they cannot remember simple things and in the same time they are doing bad things such as drinking alcohol and what not...
It's THEIR fault.

Of course...they...never...want...to...admit...it.

Come on...get real!

There is a big difference between getting drunk every day and having a beer on the weekends. As for food, what do you consider healthy? It's also important to get lots of exercise, but lots of people on CF aren't that big into eating healthy and getting exercise.

Also, what kind of doctor are you? I'm interested in hearing more about your "patient" too.

I am a medical technician.I worked in a hospital for some time until I moved to E.R. where I worked as a paramedic for some time.
Right now I work in a firm as a computer programmer. But will probably go to work as a paramedic for a year or two.

Reason: Every day something new so it's never boring. :D

Soon here where I live there should be an advanced class for medical technicians so I will finish that too. After that I will be a paramedic specialist.

And cares about the "patient".I had tons of them when I was working in the hospital few years ago.He died because he was doing a lot of bad things to him self. That's it.

As for the food, macrobiotic food is the best option if you ask me.I eat that kind of food every day.I eat other things too,but not a lot.
Unfortunately many people don't do that because it requires too much time every day for it's preparation.
And yes getting a drink here and there usually does not cause any problems. But I know so many people who drink almost every single day a lot.And that's very bad.

And yea lol...I agree that many people here at CF do not eat healthy food.Bad for them I guess. :D

320GB hdd? Did those even exist when you were 14? In 2001 when I built mine I had 2 75GB drives and those were pretty close to the highest capacities they had at the time. I think they had some over 100GB but they were pretty expensive. I remember reading the review on them in a PC magazine (The IBM "deathstar") and they were quoted saying that 75GB is such a massive amount of space that they couldnt possibly see the need for it. And at the time, they were pretty accurate haha. A few years later, not so much haha.

Haha. Was the top of the line must have hard drive of that year....until a few months later when they all crashed. (mine lasted about 3-4 years before they both crashed and I am still very pissed about it because I lost THOUSANDS of pictures from my early days in photography with my Nikon E990. I only managed to salvage about 10. I know I had over 3,000 pictures on one hard drive that I was able to move over onto a 40GB Maxtor HDD after one of them crashed and then later the Maxtor crashed but I wasnt able to recover them from that one)

And on the topic of alcohol and drugs killing brain cells.....well yes, they do. Alot of things kill brain cells outside of those, but it was recently discovered that even in your late 20s brain cells will not be lost forever and will come back. It was previously believed that once you start killing brain cells, they are gone forever. As long as you exercise your mind, just like your body, it will evolve with that and build on itself just like muscles.

I agree with geoff that moderate drinking (like on the weekends considering your not just getting hammered drunk every weekend) will have little to no effect on your cognitive abilities. And there are a number of drugs that DO cause permanent brain damage over time, lots. But smoking (like cigarettes) I dont think does. I actually know alot of people who get high smoking weed everyday and a few of them are very intelligent. With that, its also known that drugs will effect every person differently to a certain degree so while some of the potheads I know are very smart, there are others I know who do nothing but sit on the couch like a rock when they get high and are almost completely retarded.

In the end, you cant always just blame drugs and alcohol for causing someone to be stupid. It doesnt work that way, at all. If someone is doing the kind of drugs that are known to cause permanent brain damage over time (such as meth) then chances are they were not very smart to begin with.

Hell, I even once knew a guy who was ALWAYS hammered drunk, even at work at my old job. And he was a pretty smart guy. Even went to college. Its sad that he wasted his life on alcohol, but in terms of intelligence he was pretty smart. Just didnt have very good self esteem I suppose.

STARS, I am just curious as to how you have been a medical technician AND a computer programmer at the age of 23? Dont you need to like have almost 8 years of college to be a medical technician (you used the word patient so Im assuming that made you kinda like a doctor which I know generally requires 10 years)? And any place Iv known for programming you need at least 4 years.

No a technician (in France) requires three years of studies, don't know if it is the same. He is not going to cure people, no need of ten years of studies, he's just repairing and preparing machines :)

Here is an easy google search:

I don't know how it can be 3 years in France lol.
Here where I am that school is 5 years long...
Here is an example video from a serie which perfectly shows exactly what I do on the job:

As for programming,I am in that area for almost 10 years.I started learning that in the same time while I was going to a medical school...

I guess I am one of those who likes both lol.
