I'm under the impression that almost everybody over here builds computers. I would have expected the staff to be able to do that, visitors less likely but I could be wrong which is one of the reasons why I'm doing this survey.

I think it's more interesting to find out why people build computers? Is it for a livelihood? Or a hobby? (or both?) Maybe to simply save money? Or some other reason?

Myself? No I don't build them as I'm not mechanically inclined and I don't have the time to learn.

I'm not going to apologize if this survey were done before because things change over time, i.e. how the percentages break out on where people fall in the categories.

So I hope this survey proves to be interesting to you and I thank you for your participation.

Yeah I usually build rather than buy because for the high-end machines at least, building is usually cheaper. I like to build them too because then I know exactly what is in the PC and you always learn new things whenever you build one.

I've built about 4 or 5 I reckon.

As for 'newcomers' not building, I think you'd be surprised. We get a lot of new members join the forum asking which parts they should buy for their systems, quite a few of them like to build. My first ever thread on this forum wasn't about which parts to buy for a PC, but quite a lot of other people's first threads are about asking which parts to buy.

I built mine for general usage originally. Not really caring if it was cheaper or not. I could have gotten the same basic components for about the same price from Dell.

Most of the time I build them just to have something to do. Done a few for friends just to get them off xbox.

I build because pre-built machines are crap for what you pay. And you get warranties on individual components that beat a standard manufacturers warranty.

I mostly build as a hobby because I enjoy it. I built my first computer in 1985 and have been building them as a hobby for myself, family and friends ever since. I couldn't tell you how many I've built over the years but I'd guess around 3 dozen or so.

Built 5 or 6 in the early 70's. Having a Intel rep as a neighbor makes it convenient. Warranty has been for 5 yrs with him. Might try again for the grand kids if needed. Only thing i build now is real log cabin bird houses and sale plenty. Just a hobby.

I have sold one or two of the desktops I've made, and I'm sure many others here have, but I can only think of a few people here who actually make a living by building and selling desktops.

+1 And, I built my pc for $200 that played games alright with used parts. Try finding a used oem pc for that price that can play games.

I've built my own then most of one for a school computer. Wish I had some more money to make machines and turn them over for a profit.

I have been building for friends and family. And of course for myself, since 1991. I like to get what I want in a machine. The better to build one is to get to learn more. If that made any since :)
But, this last computer I built for myself is to last me for about 3 -4 yrs. Getting my Windows 8 pro x64 Dec 5, and my other two 200mm case fans for it. Going to buy a 24" monitor in the Spring for it.
