Do hard drives REALY need cooling?

I was just wondering if hard drive cooling in necessary. Or if it not being cooled could make it useless over time. Just give me some tips of products and info on if I should cool it or not.

Thanks, Ryan

As long as you have decent airflow in your case, a hard drive cooling fan isnt necessary.

Yes and no. They dont require too much extra cooling as in fans and such. They do produce heat, but not nearly as much as a CPU would. On most computers, you can just leave them in the 3.5" rack, and you'll be fine. But you wouldnt want to keep a hard drive in a place that gets no air circulation.

Yup, I've never had to cool mine. With CPU temps 20-40C, ambient temps between 60-70F my cases have always been cool.

Cooling any major componet will always help. I do know that the higher rpm hard drives put off more heat. I run WD 10000 rpm raptor and a WD 7200rpm in my system. I have a Vantec Iceberg hard drive cooler on each and have never had any problems. These coolers are not that expensive and are worth the money in my opinion. I hope this help.

My System
asus AN8 SLI Premium mobo
Amd 64x2 4400+ dual core cpu
enermax 600watt psu
2 6800 GS Evga 256mb boards
2 gb of Cosair dual channel pc3200 (4 x 512 )
Pri. HD WD 10,000 rpm 74gb sata raptor
Sec > HD WD 7200 rpm 250gb sata
HP DL DVD lightscribe burner
NEC DL DVD burner
Case Aspire Navigator

most harddrive has an upper temp limit of 55 degrees C or something, just keep an eye on it. My harddrives temp dances around 35 so i'm all set. I guess unless you live in a really hot region and your computer doesn't have any front fans and such, you really shouldn't have to worry too much about harddrives.

Cool thanks I was thinking about buying one of those cool drives once I get my new case. I wasn't sure if it woulr be any good or not so I asked on here. Actualy Right now I have this heat sink on the side of my hard drive! It looks really ummm diffirent if you know what I mean.

It could be good for show and tell.. but you really dont need it. As long as you keep your case in a well open space and not cramp it into a hole with no opening. As long as you have a good one for your cpu, u should be fine.

I live in Arizona 100*+ and i had a Fujitsu 36.7GB 15,000 RPM SCSI Ultra320 68pin Hard Drive that went out on me from over heating... i think not to sure, I just had it stacked with all my other HD's with 2 80mm fans blowing over them. all the other HD's where fine tho.

If you are running anything more than 10k or dont have very good air flow then i would look into HD coolers other than that i dont think you need them.

it depends where you live really... ambient temps can cause havok with some systems.
im lucky in that i live in a relatively cool country and my case takes into account of the need to have good airflow. Usually a fan blowing across the drives is more than enough
