I'm running a GeForce 6600GT and I'm increasingly unhappy with the results I'm getting optimizing my monitor (old Dell p991 Flatscreen CRT 19") through the Nvidia control panel's built in display optimization util. Can anyone suggest a good freeware display optimization program?

Welcome to the forums! The optimization program in Nvidia only automaticly adjusts your screen resolution and your monitor refresh rate. You can change these settings yourself if your not happy with them. Simply, right-click anywhere on your desktop, select "Properties" then click on the "settings" Tab. In here you can click and drag the slider to adjust the resolution (you have to click apply for the settings to take place so you can see the difference). In the advance menu, you'll find the refresh rate, in the monitor tab.

If you have any other questions, come back anytime.

It is always best to set it yourself, automated program don't really work that well. This is the same with overclocking programs, its always better to maually do it.

I may be using the wrong terminology, but the Display Optimization Wizard I am running from the NVIDIA Control Panel sets everything but those two options. I have manually set the reso and refresh to 1600x1200 and 60Hz. When running the Display Optimization Wizard, it prompts me to set Brightness and Gamma to 100% using the front-panel buttons on the monitor, and then walks me through a series of screen adjustments to set the brightness and gamma -- 'Lower the brightness till these bars appear black', 'slide these bars till colors match for gamma correction'.) My main complaint is that while system colors and text appear beautifully, most photos appear too dark and the gamma seems low. I do a lot of digital photography work, so its a problem.

Brightness and gamma are in the "Adjust desktop color Settings" of the Nvidia Panel if you want to adjust it yourself. There's also adjustments on your monitor.
