In my office I have a phone line which works perfectly (dial tone when I pick it up).
However, when I attempt to connect the line to my laptop computer so as to access the internet I get a message: 'no dial tone found' (error 680). The laptop computer is properly configured for a dial-up connection and works faultlessly when connected to other phone lines in other places. I have the correct dial up number etc. The settings are correct Moreover the connections and flex used are not at fault.
So why am I unable to get a dial tone for my computer when there is no difficulty it obtaining one (from the same line) for my telephone.
My efforts to follow the trouble-shooting list for 'no dial-tone' given in Windows XP Home Edition, my O.S., have yielded no answer. (including unchecking 'search for dial tone option)
