Dial up on a router?

I've seen that routers can be used to share DSL from one PC to another.

Can I do this with a simple dial up?

NIC connects to router?
Then, 2nd PC connects to router?

Would this work?

you just need an external modem that holds the connection open

you could use one computer as a server to share the connection, but then that computer has to stay online

broadband connections are just EASIER is all, but it can be done if you only have one phone line

you know if you're really gonna spend say £40 on a router you may as well get boadband as lots of the isp's now provide you with a router at startup, and as said before broadband is easier, faster, doesnt cost much more than dial up and it doesnt block your phone line ;)

if everyone in the house just uses AIM, or checks their mail, it may be enough :)

I don't even remember what 56k was like.

I used to have dsl long before i ever got cable, and i still remember THAT being far too slow, even just hooked up to a single computer.

I don't know what your budget is, but i get my roadrunner for $30 a month through school, which is a pretty good deal if you ask me.

It pays for itself over and over, in my opinion.

and if your parents already have cable, adding roadrunner is only $35 a month extra if you buy your own modem (i bought a wcg200 for $79 at compusa)

and if you just get the slower 3mb/s package, i believe it's ony $20 or $25 a month.

if your residence allows broadband then get it rather than waiting so long for page to load and stuf especially if you have to update your antivirus or running windows update :) it pays itself for the time that you save of waiting :)

I use Dial-up though a router, what make and model is your's? So yes it works once you post your make\model I should be able to give you step by step instructions. :)

I actually don't have the router yet ...

Where do your network wires lead to/from?

I would get a D-link I found that my linksys router need DSL to work right. :D

Anyway I have the PC with internet hooked up to the router and have it set to share its connection, then I have another PC hooked up to the router set to use ICS (Internet connection sharing) then I had to manually configure the IP address, default gateway IP and DNS sever IP on the computers using sharing the internet connection.

Let me know if you want screen shots, or more detailed help. :)

sharing 48k of bandwidth (if you are in the USA since the FCC regulations won't actually allow full 56k connections) among several clients will make your internet/email experience run extremely slow. Just buckle down and get broadband. I have 5mb cable connection and I only pay $30/month which is a nominal fee in my mind.

Or you can hunt down a router that has a built in 56k modem, like some of the older apple base stations had them.
