I am part of a design group from Savannah College of Art and Design. We are currently working with Dell trying to find the next college level computing system. My question to you is what are your thoughts about Dell computers (good, bad, anything)? If you have a Dell computer why did you choose that computer? If there is anything you could change about Dell what would it be? If you could also include you age, profession/major, and what your primary uses of your computer would be awesome so we can form personas. I know this is a lot so THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!!!!

Dell computers typically have the cheapest price for the specs, at least when it comes to budget computers. Their warranty service seems fantastic, but any customer service outside of warranty support is pretty poor. Perhaps a bit less reliable than other computer brands at a comparable price.

The consumer grade desktops and laptops (Dimension, Inspiron, XPS) are very poorly made and have very cheap performance. The commercial grade (Latitude, Precision, etc.) are a lot better. I personally have a Dell Latitude E6500 because the case is very durable and the performance I got is well worth the money for the overall build quality. My friend has the same machine and has dropped it quite a bit and it still works perfectly, though it looks like hell now.

I'm a 19 year old college student studying Networking & Security. I primarily use my laptop for web surfing and occasional paper writing. I also mildly game when I'm bored.

I previously have owned a dell dimension 3000 back in the day (2004) i got this because i was in high school and needed a computer for myself for homework, research and a few games like vice city that would run on the 128 mb onboard video card. Nowadays businesses are the only ones buying dell computers as they are seen to be reliable i.e won't break down and businesses can get a better deal off dell if buying say 50 computers.

Agreed. Like I said in my post, the Inspiron series laptops really don't last very long.

I have had an Inspiron for 4 years now and have had zero problems with it. I just wiped it clean and reformatted for the first time since ive had it, adn i only did that so i could run linux by itself without having to run a VM. I am a CIS major doing programming and network security so i use it a lot and for more than the average use of web surfing and word processing, never had any issues. love it i am looking at getting another one in the next year.

I've had one for about 4 years, aside from shipping with bad RAM I haven't had any problems with it.

You do have to keep in mind that we are not "average users". We know how to take care of our equipment.

before I am fascinated with dell computers, but after my dell inspiron crushed (using it for only 2 years), I got disappointed with it.. now I am using a PC that I personally put on together (customized), and I am well satisfied with it..

but after my dell inspiron crushed

No, but in all seriousness. Dells are hit or miss for me. My grandmas laptop has been nothing but problems and she rarely ever uses it. Then my dad has one close to the same model and its never had a problem and he uses his all the time.

Haha I have an electric hydraulic log splitter at work my boss bought to destroy hard drives. One day we took an old P3 Dimension and stuck it on there. It looked pretty much like that when we were done :D
