OK so after weeks of research (I knew nothing about current technology before I started) I think I've finally decided on a build for my new PC. But because my knowledge is a little limited, I'm worried that some of the components I've selected may be incompatible. Also, if there are any general comments I'm more than happy to hear them, obviously I want to make sure I've got this right before I spend the $2,500
So here are the components I've decided on:
CPU: Core i7 920
Motherboard: Asus P6T
Graphics: Radeon HD4870x2 2GB
RAM: 6GB Corsair XMS3 (1333MHz)
HDD: Caviar Black 1TB
Case: Gigabyte 3D Mars
PSU: PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W
Optical drive: Undecided
Regarding the optical drive, are there any particular recommendations? I figured I would just pick one up while I was in the store buying the other parts.
The cooling that comes with the CPU should be sufficient if I'm not overclocking I assume, so should I only consider alternate cooling options (non-stock parts) if I decide to overclock?
Also, when putting the system together, will I need thermal paste or heat conductive gel or whatever it is? Is there a particular brand or something that is recommended?
