I have been looking into Bitcoin mining lately, and I was told that since bitcoins are becoming mainstream, and have increased in difficulty, that mining a different cryptocurrency, such as lite coin would be better. My first question is how do I go about this? Can I use the same hardware as bitcoin mines, such as ASIC chips. What software will I need, Is there different software for bitcoins, lite coins, etc. Or do I just join a different pool? My second question, is what is the best cryptocurrency? There are hundreds to choose from, which will make the most profit if I start mining now?

One thread is enough. Bitcoin has increased in difficulty but a 600GHs miner still handles it perfectly. There are no ASICS for scrypt coins yet (LTC, FTC, etc.) And when there are they will be different then SHA-256 (BTC, etc) ASICs. Also, LTC has also increased in difficulty and isn't as profitable as it was.
