Crosswire Patch Cable – Can’t Network

Hi guys.

I unsuccessfully tried to Network my Laptop and my PC together using a:
Crosswire Patch Cable: CAT 5e Patch Cord

Here’s the exact one I have:
http://www.computerplug.com/show_product.php?product_id=CAT607X

I went through all the steps that were required on WinXPs Network Wizard…I had my Crosswire Ethernet Cable running from and to both computers. After going through the procedure of the ‘Network Wizard’ on both computers I was given information saying that a Network was Successfully Setup (received on both computers).

My problem is I cannot see the other computer when I go to ‘My Network Places’.
Is the Crosswire Cable supposed to be inserted in the Ethernet slots? Because that what I did :)

When I’m on my Laptop I can’t see my PC and vice-versa.

Have I missed a step?

Any help would be great.

P.S. If I missed stating some info…let me know!

Yes, use the ethernet ports. right click on My Computer, then click Properties, and then Computer name tab. You should have the Workgroup name exactly the same on both computers. Then you need a common protocol configured: right click My Network places, properties, rightclick you lan connection, properties. Now you can either setup TCP/IP manually, or just install NetBui if you have it. If not, setting your IP will be a bit more complex...

Hiee!

I do…it’s called MSHOME on both computers.

In what way is setting up my IP more complex?…I’m a pretty quick learner!
Maybe if it’s a lot of work you could direct me to a website that could help me!

Thanks for the help!

i would think it should be set to TCP/IP by default, so i wouldnt worry about the protocol settings...are you running any sort of firewall? i know i felt so stupid when i was messing with my network, because i couldnt see the other computer because of my firewall  also if you have SP2 its firewall may not allow the computers to connect properly..

a faulty NIC could be to blame as well, i would test both NICs..you can do this by opening the command prompt Start>Run>command then when the command prompt comes up type "ping localhost" without the quotes...if you get 4 "reply from blah blah" then it works fine...do that on each NIC...

then you can attempt to ping the other computers NIC by doing the same thing except type "ping *insert name of computer*"...such as "ping bedroom" or something like that..if you get a reply then the computers are connected properly and there is something else preventing them from communicating...if you get something like "request timed out" then thats bad juju...
hope this helps somehow?

Hi!
Thanks for the help!

What is an SP2 Firewall?

Does NIC mean nickname?

hope this helps somehow?
It definitely does…thanks a lot…

BTW, I can ping the ‘localhost’, but I cannot ping my computers – get ‘Request Timed Out’.

Much Love…
