Crossover cables

Hi guys, i have a laptop and my desktop, both are running windows XP. I have a crossover cable which i connected to both the ethernet ports. Now im stuck, i take it i have to make a new connection or something but where, why and how. Is there a freeware program that i can download somewhere that would make this a whole lot easier, thanks.

thanks for the suggestion but i cant find anything on there that realtes to direct networking with a crossover coble

its very simple, here is what you do:

Get all cables hooked up
enable the connections on both computers (if not already on)
go into the properties page, hit TCP/IP, and properties or configure
type in an ip address like 192.168.0.64, windows should fill in the subnet
then do the same on the other computer except have it end with a 0.65.
If it still doesnt work, try setting a gateway.

also an easy way is to just use the windows network setup tool. its so easy.
