Crazy prices UK

Maybe someone else has said about this before recently but I haven't seen it; has anyone noticed the price fluctuation for computers parts? Madly expensive to get hold of RAM DDR2/3, processors, m/b's right now. I swear it feels like I'm tripping! Maybe it was on the News or similar. Recession is the case? I'm not sure - but same spec parts some months ago cheaper - I thought prices went down over time due to new stuff constantly coming out. I bought my RAM "Patriot Extreme Performance Viper Series DDR2 4GB (2 x 2GB) PC2-6400" ages ago - 31/12/2008 - 12/31/2008 - INVOICE £35. Now £82 UK and $109.99 on newegg (£68). Sold a Dual Core E1280 2.0ghz few months ago on ebay £20 - looked at previous sales (completed listings) to see recent average at time and that was about right / good money. Now £30 average. 2 months and its 3rd hand value increased by half over its 2nd value. I need some future vision as I cudda made a bundle of cash. Any of us could have, especially on RAM. I can now sell mine on eBay at a profit! The madness! Anyone else here see this happening? I've been calculating that if I sell some parts now I can get better parts at same price from what I'll get selling the old parts. Some even brand new. Example: ddr2 for THIS ddr3. P35 m/b for 2nd hand X38 m/b. Prove-able and check-able.
Maybe I don't just understand "markets" - but I'm totally confused and frustrated that I didn't see this so as to make sum of money

Yeah DDR2 prices have gone through the roof since the release of the i7 processors which use the newer DDR3...you can pick up more, faster, better DDR3 for cheaper that it would cost you for less DDR2 in some places.

Its pathetic realy, theyre acting like theres a shortage or DDR2....

Socket Lga 775 motherboards are still way way overpriced imo, especialy now theres newer AM3 and I5/I7 boards out.

I think the Uk tax going back up has not helped either

tell me about it i bought some used xms2 ram (ddr 2 800) for around £15.00 on ebay then sold it for almost £40.00. ?!?

i know what you mean prices here in the UK are mad but what can you do, maybe its cheaper if we buy from newegg and ship it to the UK!!!!!

you can't do that, newegg don't ship outside of US.

But memory I am not surprised it is so "high" tbh. It isn't that it is massively high, it is that we got used to the really really low prices late 08/early09. For instance, I got 8GB (42GB) OCZ gold series PC6400 memory for £70. Now for what is effectively stupid amount of memory that can do just about anythibng and the amount, at the time, you would expect in the highest end systems, that is stupidly low. Now £120 or so for used or £150 for new isn't all that surprising, it is about right for that amount.

Motherboards and CPU though, I don't quite agree with you, £100 for the major components, mobo, CPU, video card and memory seems about right and I picked up my mobo for £80 (here), CPU for £74 inc p&p (can't give link, it was OEM from OcUK) and memory, I managed to jump on an amazing deal thanks to a cock up from scan and their pricing, this is it normally as it is now and I got it for £85, so those prices seem reasonable to be totally honest for a quad core, AM3 system

So you only got it at the price because of a "cock up from scan and their pricing" and say you dont agree with me (or everyone else that has replied in agreement to I)? You got lucky getting it that low as you stated. None of the prices Ive quoted were due to luck, that was just market value at the time.

Another example - got my e2180 for £40 in June '09. Now is more expensive @ £48 - £60! an easy example. prices have increased on inferior parts i.e as ddr2 and this. just look about, what im saying is true

it still comes in at around the £100 marks, which is what I am saying is reasonable for the main components.

You also hvae to remember that it is still just after christmas, prices always go up on computer parts around christmas, even just after. And always with older parts that are still perfectly fine for a current setup, people want them for the cheapness.

A C2D will still play any game currently going with no problems but is ofcourse cheaper than an i3 (which is pretty much the same what with the new namign system :P), athlon or phenom x2 or a quad core system, so for someone building a budget gaming build, a C2D is ideal. People saw that so knocked the prices up because many want them.

It always fluctuates and it really wouldn't surprise me if in a few months people are going "omg, I payed x amount for this part, now it is x amount cheaper, how unlucky am I" and yes, it is bad luck, but clearly it is at a slightly higher point than we were 6 months ago, in 6 months we may be higher still, we may be lower.

My point is it isn't cray prices, it is just that a few months back we were at a hell of a low point, now because stuff is raising in price, people think it is out of the ordinary, when look back 18 months and these would have been fairly good prices.

and you say DDR2 is nearly the same price as DDR3, but look at current systems. DDR3 is still the "new" stuff and most systems are on DDR2 still. It was common knowledge that you could give a fairly high performance increase by spending £40 on a 2x2GB kit of DDR2 just over a year ago. Now, even though the prices are higher, if you are on a tight budget, it is still cheaper to spend £70 on a 2x2GB DDR2 kit than to go and get even an AM3 board, AthlonII x2 and 2x2GB DDR3, so those on the tight budget would get the DDR2 rather than build what is effectively a new system and the manufacturers and retailers know this, so squeeze this market for as much as they can. It is also the people that are trying to get what they can out of their system before they upgrade fully to a new system.

Like you said in the first post, was recession the reason? And probably. Go back, again, just over a year when prices were dirt cheap and the recession was driving the prices of just about everything down, it was that parts were cheap then, not that they are expensive now. They are expensive now compared to 12 months ago, but not expensive in the big scheme of things, they are about right.

I agree that the memory thing with DDR2/3 prices being enar equal is a bit silly, but still think that it is down to the niche markets that i put above

i know newegg only ship to the us lol thats why i was sarcastic by putting explamation marks at the end

aah I see.

Well we could always wait for ScOuT to go back to germany, he can get stuff from newegg there :D, he could be the go-between for Europe

i tend to use scan as i find it very good
2 ebuyer
3 aria
4 micro direct
5 overclockers - only check out the website to look at the overclocked bundles aka the 920 overclocked to 4.00ghz i would probably buy it as im useless at overclocking

now I have free shipping from OcUK, I tend to use them quite a bit more than I used to. Scan was always the better option because no shipping charges

free shipping from ocuk!!!! and i order of scan and its definatley not free shipping if you order more than 1 item its worth it but if you just order 1 item its £6 for shipping so not worth if your just getting 1 thing thats were ebuyer comes in

Scan I don't pay shipping because I love half hour drive away, so go pick it up from them for a couple quid in fuel at most.

And free p&p from OcUK because if you are a member of the forums for a month (I think) and have 250 posts, or for 3 months and have 100 posts, you get free p&p

I get free next day delivery on ebuyer xD It's only one off, It used to be dad's account before I was 18, my dad turned 50 today and as a present you get free next day delivery xD I'll take that!
