A couple weeks ago I noticed the sound coming out of my computer was drastically reduced. (Probably cut by more than half). None of the levels were changed, the computer wasn't moved so a bad connection couldn't have just showed up. I have a Dell desktop and though maybe my soundcard was dying or I had a bad driver. I reformatted my computer and still have the same problem. I then bought a new sound card and installed it hoping that maybe the card was dying. However, the new card and the old one sound exactly the same. (They are different brands). There was a couple times last week when I was playing a song and the sound shot back up to the volume it would normally it would normally be and then drop back down to the lower volume it's at now.
I feel pretty confident now knowing it's not a soundcard or software problem. This only leaves the speaker system as the remaining suspect. They are altec lansing's. (4 satelitte speakers and 1 subwoofer). Could the amp in the subwoofer be shot? I can't find any settings that have changed or any other potential problem. I'm really stumped.
