Constant Freezing/Crashing

My desktop has decided to play a new game with me where it will work perfectly for a while and then at any random moment in time it will become almost completely unresponsive, to the point where even ctrl-alt-del won't load and only the cursor moves. The only way I can remedy this is with a restart. Other times, it will suddenly restart itself for no apparent reason, right in the middle of me doing something. It will then proceed to reload and continue as if nothing happened! Because of this I'm worried it might be a hardware problem like the CPU overheating or something.

What are your specs and how high of temps are you getting? What are you doing when this happens, anything in particular? Have you scanned for viruses/malware? Have you tried a memtest?

Hello, sorry for the late reply! I did a memtest using memtest86 overnight. it did 14 passes with no errors. I also did a chkdsk, which came up clean.

I think the problem may have come from my antivirus, F-Secure, because I tried to do a scan and it wouldn't load the scanning engine even after several reboots and a long wait. I couldn't figure out how to make the scanning engine load so I just reinstalled the program. I am doing a scan now and I'll post the results.

The virus scan finished and it found 5 malware and 9 spyware. Thing is, looking at the log, all the "viruses" are joke programs I used a long time ago, to play practical jokes on the more computer illiterate members of my family! :D Other so called "viruses" are adware programs which I'm not using anymore, and they don't make popups appear unless they are installed manually, (therefore, I assume they are harmless). The new version of F-secure is known to be overzealous with flagging things as "viruses." I have also had experience of this program causing slowdowns before, but never on this scale.

The machine has been on all day today and hasn't crashed, so I think the problem is solved since reinstalling the antivirus!

If that doesn't work, I'd just uninstall it and get Avast! or AVG instead. Sounds like its not that great of software.

A lot of antivirus programs detect joke programs as viruses. I think it's to cater for the more computer illiterate people! :P
I've used F-secure for a long time and though it's not the best it's one of the best. It's bound to go wrong once in a while. Besides, it's the software that's used at the company my dad works for, meaning that I get it for free, so I'm not complaining! :D
Computer is still fine btw...

Let's start from the hardware:

What is your motherboard system temperature and what is the processor temperature?
Also do your fans spin properly?

Also did you touch anything in the BIOS?
Such as the shutdown temperature and things like that?
