connectivity issues

a friend of mine has their cable internet connection setup as follows:

webstar cable modem runs two connections to two seperate computers, one via ethernet and the other via the USB connection (both outbound from the modem). i don't know if this is possible, but her internet worked fine earlier, so i'm assuming it is.

the connection works fine on the other computer, but on her USB based connection it isn't active at all. i've tried a release/renew, only to be returned 0.0.0.0 for the ip, subnet, and gateway. she has no firewalls enabled, the DHCP client service is started, and all drivers are present to run the connection the way it is setup. it's sounding more and more like a virus, but i don't know...any suggestions would be appreciated..

What she's trying to do is fundamentally impossible for a cable modem to acheive by itself. The two different options are meant to be an either-or set-up, not a double-dip... Basically, the modem will only send/assign 1 IP address (the 1 from your ISP), therefore only allowing 1 computer to connect through that one IP. However, if she were to purchase and use a router, then she could have both computers hooked up. The reason being that a router takes that 1 IP and the multiple computers and "masks" the IPs and assigns computers that are connected to it, their own, separate IPs (hence the term subnet mask). To the outside world it still looks like 1 IP, but due to the router, you can have multiple computers connected to the one IP...

yeah, i didn't think it was possible, and she was begging me to call her internet company (charter), but i was afraid to. i'm gonna take an extra hub i have layin around and see if that'll do the trick.. thanks

so they were running with both USB and Ethernet? How long did they do it for?

i don't know exactly how long, but it was for a good while i know (at least a year). this is off topic, but does the ip 0.0.0.0 have a name? i could swear it does, but i just don't know what it is..

had her unplug the ethernet cord so that the only thing running from the modem was the USB connection. had her cycle everything, and then when attempting to renew the connection, was still returned 0.0.0.0 ....

The reason I asked how long you had it going was to figure out how long it went on for. I did the same thing with a friend. He used USB and I Ethernet and our ISP was charter. Try changing out the modem. As charter is mt ISP, I know they will let you change out your hardware 1 for 1. Tell them the usb port isn't connecting and they will give you a new one and check out the old one. It's what they get for using second hand equipment.
