connecting two computers together?

I have some files on one computer in this house that I want to transfer to the other. Some of the files are over 700mb meaning I cant burn them on a cd-r to do the transfer.

Is it possible to hook up two computers together and copy and paste a file from one computer to the other? If yes, please explain in detail how I would do this.

You could network the computers then when you are finished while one of them (the main one) is connected to Internet, someone else can use the other computer to go on Internet via the main computer.

You would have to get a network card for both computers, if they don't have one already, and also connecting cable.

It has been done you might be able to do it via the parallel ports.

How far away are the computers?
What operating system are on them?
Do you computers have any network cards in them at the moment?

Sorry I have not totally answered your request, let us know what the answers are and we could take it from there

Me too!
i need to transfer 80gb to me my new pc, but heres the problem, the old pc won't come on right. the task bar at the bottom won't come on. the only reason why i need to, is because of all the pics and music i need to get out.

about 2 feet, (there are next to each other, for the moment)
old one xp home, the new one xp pro
network card? the both have a ethernet port on them

Pretty far but I can hook them up next to eachother if necessary.

Windows XP on both.

Honestly, I have no clue what that even means. I have little technical computer knowledge.

All you need a cable to run between the computer Ethernet port, and then find a tutorial on how to set it up, I don't know I still run on windows 98.

You need a crossover cable, like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812117823

Then assign two different IPs to each computer.

To assign an IP:
Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Local Area Connection > Properties > Internet Protocol > Properties.

1. Click "Use the following IP address" and make your system's IP address 192.168.1.10, make the subnet mask 255.255.255.0, and the default gateway 192.168.1.1

2. Now click "Use the following DNS server addresses. Make the preferred DNS server 192.168.1.1, do not fill in the alternate DNS server.

3. Close that window as well as the Local Area Connection window, your system is set-up.

To do this to the next system, Repeat all steps, but make the IP Address on the next computer 192.168.1.20 and for the next system 192.168.1.30 and so on.

This goes for XP/2000, I haven't used 98 or anything below that since my PII.
