connecting printer to network

I have been trying to connect my printer to my other pc via a wired router, but it doesn't work. To set it up I went to the control panel and when selecting to add a printer, I chose the option 'local printer attached to this computer'. I then followed the instructions and apparently completed adding the printer, although when I asked it to print out the test page, a dialogue box came up saying that there is an error with the printer. I have tried several times in adding the printer again, and it still doesn't work.
the printer is hp deskjet 840c if that helps.

please help me!
 
which computer has the printer and which computer is networked. the computer with the printer connected to is a local printer. the computer that has to connect to the printer via network then the printer needs to be setup as a network printer. Make sure the printer has sharing enabled.

local printer--connected to computer
network printer--connected via network
