Connecting My Guitars To The Computer + Software

Hiya, Me and my brother would like to connect our guitars to my computer, so that we can record / edit our work, of course I don't mind spending a bit of money on whatever is needed, cables, connectors ect

What would be the best way of doing this?
And what software is good for editing the music we produce?;
Also we would like to add drum beats and effects to the work.

Thanks very much and I hope I have explained clear enough for you.
Help is very much appreciated:)

Thanks guys for the reply, I think I can manage from here.

Monkey - It was good, but I don't think one would understand "Long poles" and "short poles"; I believe they are called 3.5mm Headphone jack, and 5.5mm Mic / Guitar / headphone / Input / Output Jack.

Ku-Sama - Thanks for the software link, it looks great!

Thanks again for your help.

Hiya guys,

I have just bought a 6mm jack cable to a 3.5mm jack, that should do the trick, I can connect my amp to the PC or otherwise connect it directly to the computer, but if I connect it directly sound is likely to be poor, due to the guitar actully being powered by the amp.

I will post back on the results when the cables arrive to tell you how it wen't :)

Thanks guys!

Also, if you want to record, the Line 6 TonePort looks awesome, has great reviews, and has some good software bundled with it. I'm looking to get one soon.

hey guys,

i just downloaded guitarfx, and its cool and everything, but i also have a program called winpatrol that picks up on file type changes and stuff like that.

anyway, when i d/l'ed it, winpatrol came up with a dialog box and said that my win32 host file had been changed. i checked out the previous file and the new file and the new one was the same as the old one, except the new one had several different websites in it...........do you guys think this software has a trojan or something like that piggybacking on it?
