I have what I think is a crossover cable(anyway to know for sure?), so what do I need to do to connect two computers?

When I plug the network cable in, should something happen? (both computers tell me a network cable is unplugged)

An easy way to tell if it is a crossover cable is to look at the ends with the tab down, if the wiring is the same on both sides than it is a crossover cable, i.e. one for transmitting and one for receiving. A crossover cable operates is half duplex, as in it can only be sending or receiving but not both.....check to see if the cable allignment is the same on both sides, thats how you can tell.

did u install correctly network cards in both computers?
select properties in network neighbourhood window and see if u have somethig like
TCP/IP <network card name>
TCP/ip remote access
file and printers sharing
client for microsoft net

If not click on add

i tried to connect a winXP pc with another with win98 on it
winXP provides to connect 2 pc
i just needed to put winXP installation cd on win98 pc and then to click "run other operation" and cd did all

PS I have italian version of winXP so i hope lines like
"run other applications" ,"remote access".....are translated in right way

tell me if i helped u

I just did this recently when I transfer from my old computer to my new computer.

This is for tranfering from win 2000 computer to a winxp computer.

go to ip/tcp setting on both computer set then manually any thing for simple just make 1 10.10.10.1 and the other 10.10.10.2 both with 255.255.255.0 submask

next make sure you know the name of the two computer. set the workgroup on the 2 computer to the same thing.

next on the old computer (windows 2000) make sure the sharing compent is install if not use window install disk to install comppnent. left click on c and pick sharing. name it c.

connect crossover cable too the nic cards of both computers. make sure it is a crossover cable. I forget the color sceme but just make sure the wires are in a different order on both side of the cable.

on the new computer(windows xp) in a open window go to tools and map network drive. type in //"name of computer"/c

now a network drive shoud appear under my computer. you should be able to drag anything out of it and put it on your new computer.

just look at the end of the Crossover cable all that mumbo jumbel talk is just mumbo Jumbo. At the end of the wire in the Rj45s the orange wires and the green wires should be switched. nothing else.
