Configuring multiple routers

Hi,

I used to have a wireless network but have now gone wired and purchased a 4 port modem router and separate 4 port router for upstairs.

The modem router works fine, but as I understand it, I need to configure static routing to enable an extension of the network on the second router.

Both routers are addressed as IP 192.168.1.1. I presume my first job is to change one IP address, perhaps to 192.168.1.2? How do I then tell both routers how to communicate?

Thanks,

Jon.

What you really need to do is get rid of one of the routers and just get a router/switch configuration. Many routers begin to conflict with each other when you have more than one on the network.

But yes, if you want them to work on the network, they do need different IPs, and you should be sure only one has DHCP enabled.

Instead of having 2 routers, I just have one router and one hub. Just plug internet into any spot and it sends it elsewhere. Works good for plug and play.

Just so you know you can configure routers to act as switches and it works great, I have several posts on this forum of how to do it.
