computer won't recognize speakers

I have an Acer ASE360 that a friend just did work on after a major virus took over, and everything is working great except the speakers. They are regular computer speakers, Altec Lansing Multimedia.

I have tried many suggestions for fixing the problem, but nothing works. It says no device, no sound card, no driver, etc. Under device manager I have yellow exclamation points and I understand that to be problems, but I don't know how to fix them.

Any suggestions?

it could possibly be the speakers themselves have failed, do you have access or to loan another set of speakers or earphones to test with
 
I tried earphones and they worked, so then I realized with all the experimenting I didn't have the speaker cords right (although I DID have them right before I downloaded the driver, so there was a problem :-)).

Now is there any way to make my SD card slot and USB port start working?? I should I ask that question somewhere else?
