Computer won't get past loading screen

Hey there, I'm Sam. I have some issues with my computer. It's a custom build about 3 years old, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD and 3.0ghz CPU. Recently the motherboard stopped working so it was replaced. Now only two days on it's having some more problems.

Last night I didn't turn it off properly, I just held down the power button until it switched off. I have since been informed that this is not good for the computer, hence why I may be having issues. It starts normally except it then comes up with the options, Start Windows Normally, Safe Mode, Safe Mode Command Prompt, etc. This is when my keyboard and mouse stop working until the 30sec countdown ends, with the option Start Windows Normally automatically highlighted. It continues onto the loading screen (http://www.computer-and-printer-reviews.com/images/ixp10.png) for about half a second and which point my mouse lights back up. BUT then it restarts and does the cycle all over again :(

Can this be fixed?
If so, how?
If not, how do I reset my computer? I don't mind losing my files but I'd prefer not to.

Any advice is appreciated

Thanks!

When you replaced the motherboard, did you replace it with the same one or a different one? If you replaced it with a different board then you will have to at least do a repair install of the operating system but a fresh install is preferred cause all the hardware on the motherboard is all different. This is probably the reason why you are still having problems.

Thanks Johnb35 but I have been using the PC for two days now with the new Motherboard, was working well too. Replaced it with the same model Motherboard too.

Well, as you have found out, abruptly turning the pc off without turning it off the right way can cause lots of problems. The first thing you need to do is to use the hard drive makers disk diagnostic utility and run it on the drive to test for errors. What brand hard drive is it?

Sam, You'll have to get into windows to run the utility. Seeing as you can't do that because of your awesome way off turning off your computer that is of no use to you.

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools

Look part way down that page where it says download seatools for dos now and click on that. You will need to accept the agreement on the next page and then give your info to get a download link. It will be an ISO file, you will need to burn the image to a cd and then boot to the cd to run the program. Run the short test and then the long test.

I downloaded Seatools and extracted it from the folder. In that folder is Autorun, readme217, RMA, SeatoolsDOSguide.pdf and Sealogo.ico. There is also a folder in there called FreeDOS. I extracted the "ke2035asrc" zip and there's a whole lot of MS-DOS batch files and ASM files.

Do I just burn all these files to CD?

EDIT: http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/v1.htm Will that ISO Recorder be okay for burning these files to CD?

Thanks

The file you download is called an iso. All you do is use a burning program that will support iso's and burn the iso image to a cd and then boot to the cd to run the diagnostic.

Will a DVD work? Also, could I please have a direct link to the download? I can't seem to find the ISO file. Thanks

So then what? I run the diagnostic then it fixes it?

Sorry for the questions, I'm kind of new to the whole broken computer scene.

Thanks

At the moment, none. Plus this PC only has a CD reader/writer and I only have DVDs. May have to use laptop if I can't locate a CD to boot XP from :(
