My pc doesnt reconise my digital camera( i also tested the camera at the library and it doesnt work there). What could be the problem? The usb cable seems fine.

Did you install any drivers that came with the camera? Usually there is a dvd with the drivers, manuals and some album software.

Did you turn the camera on when you plugged it in? Typically you have to do that and then say you want to connect it to a PC.

I have installed all that came with camera and camera is turned on. The camera has worked with my pc and other pcs for about 2 years..now suddenly it wont reconise. It is a very decent canon dslr so I need to fix this. Camera is next to useless without being able to view pics, might get a sd card reader swee if that works but would prefer to fix without this. Would formatting the camera help? Rather not do this as I have 1000 pics on it. Help appreciated.

check the device manager and see if the camera is there. See a yellow exclamation at all. On the other hand if SD card i never used a camera. always used a card reader and pop the card in and erase after i backed up.
lot easier. i would not want to loose a 1000 pictures.

You forgot to mention that in your first post. You should not format the SD card until you have downloaded the images. If you can't do it temporarily on your PC take it to a photo place or friend's PC and get them downloaded on to DVD or HDD.

Try reinstalling the drivers again (worth checking in Device Manager first as Tremmor mentioned). You don't need to update - clearly the original drivers were working fine up to a point in time. I have a Fuji camera. I only installed the drivers, no software, and let Windows Scanner and Camera Wizard start up when the camera is connected.
