computer to computer file transfer

I just got a new laptop and I have close to 5gig of files I want to transfer to it from my desktop. I can't burn a DVD since my desktop doesn't have a DVD burner. I would like to just set up a temporary network between the two computers and transfer the files like that, but I don't have a router. Is there a way to set up a network controller on my desktop to create this mico-lan?

of course, just plug a CAT5 cable into the ethernet ports on each computer directly computer to computer. thats how ive always networked my comps. you can just run network wizard on both computers and it should work fine.

Did you mean a crossover cable?

still can't get it to work. The computers can see each other, but can't resolve and IP anc thus can't obtain connectivity

you need a crossover cable to do that. even if you have gigabit which is supposed to autoswitch, i would still say use a crossover cable.

a crossover has a 568A connector on one end, and a 568B on the other end. all that is the standard of the order of the pairs in the RJ45 connector. basically, it switched the sending pair on one end to go into the receiving pair on the other end and vice versa with the other pair. two pairs are not used. the color codes are as follows:

568B
white orange
orange
white green
blue
white blue
green
white brown
brown

568A
white green
green
white orange
blue
white blue
orange
white brown
brown

you dont need a cross over cable, you can use a normal cat5

I was under the impression you need a hub or switch when using a straight through cable.... and computer to computer directly is cross over... is this REALLY incorrect?

yes it is correct. crossover for connecting like devices. computers are generally alike. . . ;) it would be the same if you were gonna connect a switch to a switch, etc to etc. . .

straight thru for most everything else. the only time you would not have to use a straight thru to connect two like devices would be if you had some sort of networking equipment (hub, switch, router) or if u are one of the lucky people who actually got gigabit working like the standard states . . . gigabit is supposed to be autosensing. . .
